BANGALORE: Balaji, a mason, met with a road accident in September 2005. He was grievously injured in his leg. The bone was exposed in the lower portion of his leg. Such cases require micro vascular surgery because the exposed bone will not survive. A micro vascular muscle flap was planned at the Sanjay Gandhi Accident Hospital and Research Institute. Plastic surgeon Madhu Kumar removed the muscle from the back (lattismus dorsi) along with its blood vessels and joined the blood vessels of the muscle to blood vessels of the leg. The procedure was conducted using an operating microscope. The operation required expertise in micro-vascular surgery and was done for the first time in the Sanjay Gandhi Accident Hospital. According to a release by the hospital, if this procedure had not been done, the patient would have lost his leg. In private hospitals, the same procedure would have cost him Rs. 1.5 lakhs. But the Sanjay Gandhi Accident Hospital charged him only Rs. 15,000. Only three corporate hospitals conducted this type of surgery in the city.
