Staff Reporter
Thiruvananthapuram: Lakshmi, a house surgeon who was on duty at the SAT Hospital on Sunday, was bitten by a snake while she was going to the deluxe paywards in the early hours to check on a patient. Her condition was stated to be stable. Paywards of SAT Hospital are in a block far away from the main block. The snake bit the house surgeon when she was crossing the area where one of the old blocks had been demolished to make way for the Golden Jubilee building. The area is poorly lit House surgeons alleged that even though they were working 12-hour shifts, they were not provided basic facilities like a duty room or rest room. There is only one house surgeon on duty at SAT Hospital at night and he/she has to attend to the patients in the ward and respond to any distress call that may come from the hospital. House surgeons have demanded that they be provided a duty room and that the hospital premises be well-lit to prevent any untoward incidents in future.
