DMDK activists held

Nearly 325 activists of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) led by cine star Vijayakant were taken into custody by the city police when they allegedly resisted and protested against the arrest of one of their division leaders in connection with an assault case. They thronged the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital causing tense moments. Later they were released on bail.

Power shutdown

In view of the ongoing capacity upgradation at the Madampatty Sub-station, power supply will be affected in the following areas till February 8: Madampatty, Kalampalayam, Kuppanur, Karadimadai, Chennanur, Alandurai, Iruttupallam, Semmedu, Poondi and Siruvani.

Pensioners' demand

The Tamil Nadu Senior Citizens and Pensioners Welfare Association has hailed the Chief Minister's decision to merge 50 per cent of the dearness allowance with the basic pension and lift the ban on recruitments. The State general secretary of the association, S. M. Chellaswamy, in a memorandum has appealed to the Chief Minister to consider their long pending demand of property tax exemption for one residential house.

Grievances day

The Superintending Engineer, Metro/Coimbatore, will conduct a grievances day meeting at the office of the Executive Engineer/Distribution/Tatabad/Coimbatore on February 1 at 10.30 a.m., for consumers in the Coimbatore division. The Superintending Engineer, Coimbatore South, will conduct a grievances day meeting for customers in Kuniamuthur area at the office of the Executive Engineer, Kuniamuthur on February 1 at 11 a.m.

Fined

The officials from the office of the Superintending Engineer, TNEB, Coimbatore South, Electricity Distribution Division, conducted surprise checks at Periyandipalayam pirivu, Chinnakkarai, Veerpandi, Nochipalayam, Lakshmi Nagar, Andipalayam, Iduvampalayam, Chinnandipalayam and Periyapalayam and found that ten service connection holders were violating rules. A sum of Rs. 12,763 was realised as fine from them.

Seminar

A seminar on `Recent trends in energy technologies' will be organised by the Department of Physics of Avinashilingam University on January 31. P. Radhakrishna, Director, Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, Regional Office, Chennai, will inaugurate.

Training

The Coimbatore Chapter of the National Institute of Personnel Management will organise a training programme on "Be and Make - Prepare to Present and to be Placed" on February 6.
