Driver dies as car catches fire

VIZIANAGARAM: A car driver was charred to death and five women escaped with injuries in a freak accident at Rajapulova Junction in Denkada mandal on Monday. Sheikh Abdul Khan (25) of Vizianagaram was burnt alive when the gas-driven car went up in flames minutes after he lost control on a slope and hit a tree. Five students of Raghu Engineering College who were riding in the car were rescued before the car caught fire. - Correspondent

Suicide pact case:

two more die

KURNOOL: Two more victims of a suicide pact at Nandyal died while undergoing treatment on Monday. Renuka Devi (45) and daughter Suma (18) succumbed to burns. Family head and president of Bhadravathi Bhavanarushi Devastana committee Padnabha Rao (50) who attemped suicide along with wife and daughter died two days ago. Letters left by the victims reportedly said they took the extreme step due to harassment by a section of Congress leaders and police. Meanwhile, former TDP Minister N. Md. Farooq has demanded judicial inquiry into the episode. - Staff Reporter

1 cr. donation to TTD

Students taken ill

NIZAMABAD: Fifteen students and a female cook of Sajwidh-ul-Khurana (a madarsa) at Sarangapur under rural police station limits were taken ill after they consumed pudding given by an unknown burqa-clad woman, on Monday. Train hits tractor

Two killed in accidents

Nellore: Two persons were killed in two road accidents in the district on Monday.

At Venkatagiri, a 13-year old student, P. Venkata Reddy, was knocked down by an autorickshaw. The accident occurred when he was going on a cycle. At Naidupet, one person was killed in a hit-and-run incident. The deceased was identified as D. Gurunatham (30), of Mahalakshmipuram, Sullurpet mandal. - Staff Reporter

Call for higher literacy among Muslims

TIRUPATI: Speakers at a meeting blamed illiteracy as a major reason for the perennial backwardness of the Muslim community.

At the district meeting of Awareness for Integrated Muslim Samaj (AIMS) held here on Sunday, P.A.Rehman stressed the need for Muslims to get educated to become a force to reckon with, both economically and politically.

Contest during Kadapotsavam

KADAPA: A kavi sammelan, painting, sculpture and cartoon contests will be held during Kadapotsavam here slated from February 9 to 12, its Fine Arts Committee convenor G. Gopal said.

Dharna staged CHITTOOR: Members of the AP Dalitha Maha Sabha, the Ambedkar Dharma Porata Samithi, AP Ambedkar Yuvajana Sangam, Ambedkar Dalitha Samithi and APSC Employees Welfare Association staged dharna and rasta roko near the Gandhi statue on Prakasam road demanding withdrawal of G.O.Ms.No.26 which, they said, provided for diversion of funds of Rs. 3687.50 crores from the Social Welfare Department to MLAs towards development of the constituencies. - Correspondent

Eye camp held

KURNOOL: District Blindness Control Society led by secretary P. Sudhakar Rao conducted a special eye camp for leprosy patients at NTR Nagar in connection with Anti-leprosy Day here on Monday. A total of 120 persons were screened for eye problems and over 50 per cent of them had problems.

Glasses were given to 35 patients free of cost. Philanthropist Theresa Gandhi supported the programme financially. - Staff Reporter

One killed in road accident

VIZIANAGARAM: One person was killed and 14 labourers suffered injuries when two quarry lorries while overtaking each other collided and fell on either side of the road near Golapalem under Garividi police station limits at 4 a.m. on Monday. CITU protest

Rajahmundry: CITU workers staged dharna in front of Sub-Collector's office on Monday under the leadership of its district president T.S. Prakash. The workers staged dharna for about two hours and raised slogans against the Government, which reportedly failed to implement the labour acts.

In Kakinada too, workers owing allegiance to CITU-led unions staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate

East Godavari tops

in FP operations

Kakinada: East Godavari district has been topping in family planning operations in the State and receiving the first prize during past three years in succession, according to S.S.C. Chakra Rao, District Medical and Health Officer.

He claimed that the district was also leading in receiving the budget incentives by performing family planning operations surpassing the targets in all the Primary Health Centres. - Correspondent

Traffic diversion

Kakinada: Sub-divisional Police Officer S. Baburao said that the traffic was being diverted in the city on different routes in view of the closure of the Railway gate at Perrajupet for urgent repairs till February 3.

Under the diversion notified, he said, all the buses, autos were being diverted from ZP centre via Fellowship centre, Sudha urology centre, night hotel junction, Kondaiahpalem railway gate, Srirama temple, Military road and Purushottam lodge centre to Bhanugudi and from there to RTC bus station complex.

Similarly, all the Rajahmundry non-stop buses are diverted from ADB road via Achampet junction, APSP centre .The Amalapuram non-stop buses, however are allowed to pass through fly over bridge, Bhanugudi junction and from there to RTC bus station complex.

Kakinada: A group of women, claiming themselves to be sex workers, under the banner of Velugu Rekha Mahila Sangham, a registered body, staged a protest demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Monday seeking protection to them from alleged police harassment. - Correspondent

Hyderabad: The Factories Department, in association with National Safety Council, has organised competitions for schoolchildren, ITI, Polytechnic and Engineering College students and women in Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medak, Mahbubnagar and Nalgonda districts on Sunday. The competition was held at the Institution of Engineers, Khairatabad. Clothes distributed

WARANGAL: The Abhyudaya Seva Samiti, a non-governmental organisation, distributed clothes to the rehabilitated child labour studying in various bridge schools in Warangal town here. MLA B. Rally for awareness on leprosy

ADILABAD: A large number of school students in Adilabad took out a rally in town on Monday for spreading awareness on eradication of leprosy disease. The rally was organised by the Leprosy Control Department on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary. The rally converged into a public meeting where bed sheets and footwear were distributed to people with leprosy disease. Winners of essay competitions were given prizes.
