Dola, Tarundeep slip to minor places

KOLKATA: The opening day of the four-day 26th senior National archery championship opened up new vistas for young hopefuls as seasoned campaigners took the back row at the half-way mark of the FITA round competitions at the SAI, Eastern Centre, here on Monday.

Sushma, largely a non-performer in the senior section for over a year, led the field with a total of 648 in the women's recurve section after two distances, 70 and 60m, were gone through.

Former National champion and Sushma's Uttar Pradesh teammate, Sumangla Sharma was second (641) while Olympians Dola Banerjee of Railways (4th, 640), Chekrovolu Swuro of Nagaland (3rd, 640) and Reena Kumar of Railways (6th, 637) were pushed to minor places. The National champion at Ernakulam, Runu Swargiery of Jharkhand ended a distant 20th with 570.

Defending men's champion Jayant Talukdar of Jharkhand, however, held his own with a total of 657 points while his team-mates Gautam Singh Sardar and Rahul Banerjee made it to the top three with scores of 639, 636 respectively.

Men's recurve: 1. J. Talukdar (JAA) 318 + 339 = 657, 2. G. Singh (JAA) 313 + 326 = 639, 3. R. Banerjee (JAA) 304 + 332 = 636, 4. Kailash (CRP) 310 + 325 = 635, 5. Majhi Sawaiyan (SCB) 306 + 328 =634.

Women's recurve: 1. Sushma (UP) 314 + 334 = 648, 2. Sumangla (UP) 305 + 336 = 641, 3. Chekrovolu (NAA) 318 + 322 = 640, 4. Dola (IR) 313 + 327 = 640, 5. Punya Prabha (UP) 311 + 327 = 638, 6. Reena Kumari (IR) 311 + 326 = 637.

Men's compound: 1. N. Damor (ITB) 335 + 326 = 661, 2. Baban Kumar (JAA) 321 + 334 = 655, 3. Jayanti Lal Nanoma (RAA) 313 + 339 = 652, 4. C.H. Lenin (AP) 317 + 333 = 650, 5. Shivnath Nagesia (ITB) 318 + 328 = 646, 6. Palton Hansda (JAA) 307 + 335 = 642.

Women's compound: 1. Jhanu (JAA) 334 + 345 = 679, 2. Manjudha Soy (JAA) 315 + 336 = 651, 3. Sakro Besra (JAA) 319 + 327 = 646, 4. Bhegyabati Chanu (JAA) 320 + 325 = 645, 5. Niva Kerketta (Indi) 316 + 326 = 642, 6. Sumanlata Murmu (JAA) 302 + 324 = 626.
