PROUD MOMENT: Vijayalakshmi, newly elected president of Zilla Mahila Samakhya with the Indira Kranti Patham Project Director Wilson Babu after her election.
KURNOOL: A Chenchu woman will head the district level federation of women's groups comprising two lakh women with a corpus of Rs 120 crores. Vijayalakhsmi of Kottalacheruvu in Kothapalli mandal of the district was elected president unanimously at the maiden general body meeting of the Zilla Mahila Samakhya here on Sunday. The Indira Kranti Patham (IKP) facilitated the formation of the district body with a membership of 125 and framing of bylaws at the meeting, which ran late into the night on Sunday. The participants resolved to elect somebody who was familiar with the state of the poorest women in the district since the basic aim of the SHG concept was to fight against poverty. Ms Vijayalakhsmi who worked with the group representing Chenchu women became the natural choice.
Tough time
The body had a tough time while electing the remaining four office-bearers - vice president, secretary, joint secretary and treasurer. Jubeda from Banaganapalli was named joint secretary as the body decided to reserve the post for minorities. The vice-president's post was reserved for a physically challenged person, who would be named later. G. Narayanamma of Panyam and Vijayalakshmi of Nandavaram were named secretary and treasurer respectively.
