THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Postal Circle is introducing early morning delivery of postal articles from Tuesday in areas covered by the Thiruvananthapuram General Post Office. `Suprabhatam,' as the Department of Posts calls this initiative, will be extended to Kochi and Kozhikode also shortly, Chief Postmaster General M.P. Rajan told a press conference here on Monday. Under this initiative, the postmen will deliver all unregistered postal articles by 9 a.m. The post office will open at 6 a.m. and, after the sorting exercise, the postmen will be on their beat by 8.30 a.m. The second delivery will be done at the usual hour. Mr. Rajan said 545 post offices in the Kerala Circle would be computerised by March-end, spending about Rs.5 crores. The department was targeting the computerisation of all the 1,464 post offices under the Circle in two years.
Internet facility
He said the department proposed to provide Internet facility in all the computerised post offices with the help of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and the State IT Mission. Idukki post office is already having an Internet café. He said that of the 24 Postal Divisions under the Circle, five would be computerised immediately. These are Thiruvananthapuram South, Thiruvananthapuram North, Thrissur, Ernakulam and Kozhikode. He said the department also planned to start `Finance Marts' in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Chengannur, Kozhikode, Palakkad, Thrissur and Ernakulam.
