Motorist tries to jump gate, fined

CHENNAI:
A car owner was fined Rs. 6,000 by a Special Metropolitan Railway Magistrate here on Monday for attempting to cross a railway level crossing gate as it was closing at Villivakkam here.
According to Railway Protection Force sources, John Wesly tried to get through the gate while it was being closed. The gatekeeper had to stop the Yelagiri Express, on its way to Chennai Central from Jolarpettai. Because of the unscheduled halt, the train was delayed by 15 minutes.
The RPF filed a case against Mr. Wesly and the Railway Magistrate fined him Rs. 6,000 or undergo nine months imprisonment in default.
Baby abandoned in train
An eight-month old baby boy was found abandoned in a reserved compartment of the Sapthagiri Express at Chennai Central on Sunday.
According to Southern Railway sources, an Assistant Sub-Inspector of the RPF found the baby during a routine check after the train arrived from Tirupati.
He handed over the baby to the railway police, who sent it to an orphanage in the city.
