CHENNAI:
Thieves broke into the house of a hardware merchant at Tiruvanmiyur on Sunday night and took away Rs. 4 lakh in cash and 35 sovereigns of jewellery.
The incident came to light on Monday when the inmates returned home.
According to their relatives, Mr Sekar, a trader residing on 3rd East Street, Kamaraj Nagar, had gone out of town and his wife Swarnalatha had gone to Vedanthangal.
When Ms. Swarnalatha returned home she could not open the door.
A worker entered the house from the terrace and found doors to two rooms broken open and clothes strewn all over.
The intruders had bolted the main entrance.
Residents in the area said that last week thieves broke into a house.
As they did not find anything, they entered the neighbouring house and made away with cash and jewellery.
