Kasaragod's merger with Karnataka sought

Kasaragod a cultural centre for Karnataka: KDA Chairman

KASARaGOD: The second Kerala State Kannada Sahitya Sammelan has called for the merger of Kasaragod with Karnataka.

Kannada Development Authority Chairman B.M. Idinabba recalled that Kasaragod's integration with Kerala in 1956 was a blow to Karnataka, as the place is a cultural and literary centre that has contributed Kannada poets, writers, thinkers and intellectuals. Even today, Kasaragod is a cultural centre for Karnataka although the Kerala Government has made Malayalam the medium of instruction in the district and "marginalised" Kannada. However, the Kerala Government has not objected to the use of Kannada or the growth of Kannadiga culture in the district, he added.

Mr. Idinabba appealed to the Karnataka Government to take note of the problems of Kannadigas in Kerala and initiate talks with the Kerala Government and the Centre to merge Kasaragod with Karnataka.

General Secretary of the Dharwad-based Vidya Vardhaka Sangh B.V. Gunjetti said areas populated by Kannadigas on Karnataka's boundary with other States should be merged with it. Kannadigas in these areas have been marginalised, he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district H.V. Parshwanth, former Chief Whip of the ruling party in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly Abhayachandra Jain, and Karnataka Tulu Koota President Adoor Umesh Nayak spoke.
