The former Advocate General M.K. Damodaran appeared to be in a mood to open up his mind on a thing or two when he was delivering the keynote address at a seminar on the Communal Violence (Prevention, Control and Rehabilitation of Victims) Bill 2005 organised by the People's Council for Civil Rights at Thalassery on January 28. The audience comprising lawyers, police officers and journalists were literally taken aback when he said that not even the CPI(M) was free from `caste mindset' in areas south of the Malabar region. A person known to have Leftist sympathies could not have been more forthright in his utterance, many of the audience felt. More was to come soon. Members of the audience, especially the scribes attending the seminar as delegates, found themselves at the receiving end of Mr. Damodaran's outpouring of his views. He said he had come to the meeting prepared to give vent to his views on the journalists. He said he had very low opinion about the scribes who would offer no natural justice to individuals they were attacking in their newspapers or channels. What provoked the former Advocate General was the prominent coverage given by the media for the Kozhikode ice-cream parlour sex scandal case. It was outrageous, he said, to compare the situation where witnesses in the case turned hostile to that in the Best Bakery case in Gujarat.
