Is the space for serious cinema fast shrinking, asks noted filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The veteran filmmaker who was honoured with Padma Vibhushan and the Dada Saheb Phalke award recently felt that the Government as well as Doordarshan were shirking their responsibility to support filmmakers who tread a different path. "Doordarshan seems to be averse to good cinema. "It was after a relentless struggle that the Union Government offered a slot in Doordarshan to telecast award-winning films and introduce directors who made bold experiments. "Gradually, the norms for selecting films were diluted and commercial films were included in the slot. Ultimately, it was eclipsed," says Adoor Gopalakrishnan.. Doordarshan's initiative was a solace for young talents who made films with a difference. Most of them survived on the royalty received for telecasting their films. The tribe of such young filmmakers are now facing the threat of extinction for want of patronage, says the noted filmmaker..
