HASSAN: Deputy Commissioner K.H. Ashwathanarayana Gowda has said that the pilgrim town Shravanabelagola is getting ready to host the Mahamastakabhisheka of the new millennium, which will commence on February 8. Committees formed for the purpose are taking steps to make the stay of pilgrims and tourists a memorable one, he told presspersons on Tuesday. He said that most of the works taken up in and around Shravanabelagola in view of the mega event have almost been completed. Cultural programmmes, organised in view of Mahamastakabhisheka, are enthralling pilgrims and tourists every evening. The committees have taken steps to provide drinking water, medical facility and attend to other emergency requirements of pilgrims and tourists. Sanitation work in the five satellite towns has been handed over to committees. The Shravanabelagola Taluk Panchayat will take care of sanitation work in and around the town, he said. A 600-member team of doctors and paramedical personnel have been deputed from various parts of the State to address emergency medical problems of the pilgrims. Construction of two bridges across Janivarakere tank and work on a few roads inside the pilgrim towns are fast progressing, he said.
Allocation of funds
Detailing the funds situation, he said that of the Rs. 115 crores earmarked both by the State and the Union Government, Rs. 82.50 crores was released. The Revenue Department has promised to release the remaining amount. Of the Rs. 2.25 crores earmarked for organising cultural programmes on the occasion, Rs. 40 lakhs has been released. To a question on the itinerary of dignitaries visiting Shravanabelagola during Mahamastakabhisheka, he said, except Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who will visit the pilgrim town on February 6, none of the dignitaries have confirmed their programmes.
