BIJAPUR: The Congress nominees Bebi Chandrashekar Chavan and Siddaray Lakshman Hirekurubar were on Tuesday elected unopposed president and vice-president of Bijapur Taluk Panchayat. The Congress has comfortable majority with 21 members most of whom owe their allegiance to local MLA M.B. Patil. The party the support of four members from the All India Progressive Janata Dal (AIPJD). The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has six members, chose not to field candidates. The Janata Dal (Secular) has one member and there is one independent in the 33-member House. After scrutinising nomination papers, Assistant Commissioner B.S. Patri declared Ms. Chavan and Mr. Hirekurubar as elected unopposed. While Ms. Chavan represents Baratagi segment Mr. Hirekurubar represents Nidoni. The post of president is reserved for Schedule Caste woman while that of vice-president is reserved for for Backward Class A.
Congress wins in Indi
Taking the benefit of reservation, the Congress bagged the post of Indi Taluk Panchayat president. The post is reserved for Schedule Tribe woman. Rupa Ravindra Naikodi, who represents Hirebevanur segment, was the only eligible candidate in the 33-member House. The Congress has only 14 members in the panchayat. Savitri Revanna Hattaraki of Janata Dal (S) was elected vice-president. She polled 19 votes while her rival Lakshmibayi Mahadev Pujari of the Congress got 14 votes. The BJP member and two independents backed the Janata Dal (S).
Hungund
Although the AIPJD has only six seats in the 22-member Hungund Taluk Panchayat, its candidate got the post of president thanks to the party's understanding with the Congress. While Kamalakshi Hanumagouda Goudar was elected President, Basavaraj Goudar of the Congress became vice-president. In the 22-member House, the Congress and the BJP have won eight seats each and the AIPJD six seats.
Mudhol
In the 20-member Mudhol Taluk Panchayat, the BJP and the Congress have nine members each. The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, which has two seats, decided to remain neutral. But the BJP bagged the post of president taking the advantage of groupism in the Congress. Rangappa Lakshman Ontgodi of the BJP was elected president securing 10 votes as against eight votes polled by Congress candidate Ramesh Panchakattimath.
