Major sugar companies eye Gulbarga district

Special Correspondent

Irrigation facilities attract attention of four companies

  • Ugar group, Renuka Sugars identify land for setting up units in Jewargi and Afsalpur
  • Hyderabad Sugar Company keen on setting up facility in Yadgir-Shahapur belt

GULBARGA: With area under sugarcane cultivation likely to increase, at least four entrepreneurs have shown interest in setting up sugar factories in the district.

Deputy Commissioner Anjum Parvez told The Hindu here on Tuesday that Ugar Sugars, which owns a chain of sugar units in the country, has decided to set up a unit in Jewargi taluk and the Belgaum-based Renuka Sugars, which had taken over Aland Cooperative Sugar Factory on lease, has decided to open a unit in Afsalpur taluk. The two companies have identified land for the purpose.

Similarly, Hyderabad Sugar Company has evinced interest in setting up a unit in Yadgir-Shahapur taluks. The Deputy Commissioner said efforts are on to revive the proposal to establish another sugar factory at Chincholi for which the initial work of identifying the location and starting construction of the factory was taken up a few years ago by a Coimbatore-based sugar major. The proposals ran into rough weather because of certain local reasons and the Coimbatore-based company kept the proposal pending.

With the completion of several major and medium irrigation projects and more areas coming under irrigation, particularly in Gulbarga, Afsalpur, Jewargi, Chitapur and Chincholi taluks, the area under the sugarcane crop is likely to increase. About Aland Cooperative Sugar Factory, the State Government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for leasing out the factory for seven years to Renuka Sugars. Renuka Markumbe, chairperson of Renuka Sugars, visited the site.
