GULBARGA: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the Karnataka State Gram Panchayat Workers' Union on Tuesday took out a procession and staged a dharna outside the office of the Deputy Labour Commissioner in Gulbarga city demanding among other things minimum wages for gram panchayat workers. Hundreds of gram panchayat workers, mostly women, and members of CITU participated in the procession from the Vallabhai Patel Chowk to the office of the Deputy Labour Commissioner and submitted a memorandum addressed to the Labour Commissioner listing out their demands. In its memorandum, CITU demanded that the State Government bring about changes in the Unorganised Workers' Bill, which was presented in the Assembly in 2002, and urged that it should be made into an Act to protect the interests of the unorganised working class.

It also demanded that the Union Government reverse its decision on the reduction of the interest rate of the provident fund contribution. In a separate memorandum, the Karnataka State Gram Panchayat Workers' Union led by Manzoor Patel Hebbali demanded that the Government pay equal wage for equal work to pump operators, sepoys, bill collectors and others gram panchayats workers in the State. At present, they are being paid Rs. 200 to Rs. 1,200 a month, while their counterparts working in municipalities and city corporations are getting the government scale.
