Animal welfare activists create a flutter

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Two women animal welfare activists created a flutter at the curtain raiser press conference for this year's India International Leather Fair (IILF-2006) here on Monday, shouting slogans against the leather industry.

The women, who appeared to be in their twenties, apparently sneaked into the press meet under disguise and started posing questions to the chairman and executive director of the Council for Leather Exports.

The two maintained silence for sometime after a `soft' question.

But by the end of the press meet, one of them asked another question and got into an argument with the chairman, M. Rafeeque Ahmed.

Even as he was replying, the two took those present by surprise by unfurling a banner that had `leather is murder' written on it.

They also shouted slogans against the industry and in support of animal welfare.
