Staff Correspondent
Madikeri: The State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), G.N. Nagaraj, has urged Legislative Assembly Speaker Krishna to give his ruling on the issue of disqualification of the Janata Dal (Secular) faction led by Chief Minister-designate H.D. Kumaraswamy. Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Nagaraj said the CPI(M) had given a petition to the Speaker, through party MLA Srirama Reddy, seeking the disqualification of those Janata Dal (S) MLAs who broke away from the parent party and forged a tie-up with the Bharatiya Janata Party in the State. Mr. Nagaraj said that under the amended anti-defection law, Mr. Kumaraswamy and his supporters were guilty of defection. The amended rule would be put to the test in the State for the first time in the country, he said. The Speaker has reserved his ruling on the petition. Normally, he should have given his ruling within seven days of receiving the petition. If the Speaker does not do so, the party could even resort to legal action, Mr. Nagaraj said. If the Janata Dal (S) MLAs are disqualified, the new government will not be able to muster support during the vote of confidence, he said. The CPI(M) condemned the "political opportunism" of the Janata Dal (S) in aligning with the BJP. The Janata Dal (S) has betrayed the people by going back on its promises to provide a secular government, Mr. Nagaraj said. Mr. Kumaraswamy should make public his party's principles and ideology, he demanded.
