Package trip to Shravanabelagola

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has arranged daily trips to Belur, Halebeed and Shravanabelagola from Bangalore on the occasion of the Mahamastakabhisheka at Shravanabelagola.

The bus leaves at 7 a.m. from Kempe Gowda Bus Station here and returns at 11 p.m. Each ticket costs Rs. 475 and tickets can be booked in advance. For details, call 22873377 or 9844021485.

Northern districts to get lion's share

BANGALORE: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has proposed to extend 40.5 per cent of its total credit earmarked for the State to the 11 districts in north Karnataka during 2006-07.

Of the total credit of Rs. 17,803 crores for the rural sector in the State, it proposes to lend Rs. 7,214.93 crores in the northern districts, Rs. 5,223.21 crores (29.3 per cent) in the southern districts, Rs. 2,794.93 crores (15.7 per cent) in the Malnad area and Rs. 2,570.07 crores (14.4 per cent) in the coastal districts. — Special Correspondent

Malaysian team meets BCIC members

Bangalore: A business delegation from Malaysia, led by Ahmed Zaidee Laidin, Chairman (Information Technology), Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia, State of Selengor, on Tuesday held discussions with members of the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC). BCIC Vice-President Venkat Kedlaya and other members interacted with the delegation.

The objective of the delegation is to explore Indo-Malaysian collaborations and opportunities in the fields of information technology, biotechnology and tourism, to name a few.

Mr. Zaidee has invited a BCIC delegation to visit Malaysia to explore the prospects there. — Special Correspondent

International meet on pathology

Bangalore: The Department of Pathology, St. John's Medical College, is organising a three-day meet on "Progress in Pathology: an International Update" from February 1 to 3. The meet is being organised in association with the Royal College of Pathologists, U.K., and other international bodies. ISRO Satellite Centre Director K.N. Shankara will be chief guest at the inaugural session.

According to programme chairperson Isha Garg, the discussions will cover many topics in histopathology as well as issues in medical ethics and medical education with particular reference to pathology. About 400 delegates from India and overseas have registered, Dr. Garg said. — Special Correspondent

Syndicate Bank ties up with West Asian firms

Bangalore: Syndicate Bank has signed agreements with two popular money-transferring outfits in Kuwait and Bahrain.

N. Kantha Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director, Syndicate Bank, signed agreements with National Exchange Company, Kuwait, and Zenj Exchange Company, Bahrain, during his visit to Kuwait last week, a statement from the bank said here.

"These tie-ups should make Syndicate Bank a strong player in the fiercely competitive Gulf remittance market," the statement said. — Special Correspondent

RelQ to double employee strength

Bangalore: Bangalore-based software testing firm RelQ plans to nearly double its headcount in the next six months to 1,000 and invest U.S. $3 million in the development of infrastructure for test laboratories.

RelQ, whose clients include Vodafone, Palm, HP and Philips, currently has an employee strength of 550, including 120 in Europe and 35 in the U.S., company co-Founder and President Prakash Mutalik told presspersons here.

ICICI and Acer Technologies of Taiwan together hold a majority of RelQ shares, with the promoters' stake being "a little less than 50 per cent," he said. — Special Correspondent

Life term for murder accused

DAVANGERE: The Fast Track Court (II) has sentenced life imprisonment to a man who allegedly murdered his wife suspecting her fidelity and burnt her body. Revennasiddappa of Mukthenahalli in Honnali taluk married Parvathamma a few years ago. He allegedly harassed his wife suspecting her fidelity. On March 6, he allegedly murdered his wife with a sickle while she was sleeping. He had threatened his father and his elder sister who witnessed the murder. He took the body in a bag to his field and burnt it. — Staff Correspondent

`Coalition won't last even six months'

DAVANGERE: Shyamanur Shivashankarappa, Davangere MLA and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee treasurer, has said that the new coalition government of the Janata Dal (Secular) and the BJP will not last even six months. He told presspersons here on Tuesday that the two parties, which were ideologically different, could not go together for long. — Staff Correspondent

Seven arrested

in Raichur

RAICHUR: The Raichur police arrested Gopi Basin, Yesu, Venkatesh, Narasappa and Bandenawaz from Deodurga town and Shivakumar and Gopi Choudimani from Sindhanur town on charges of gambling and recovered Rs.11, 250 from them on Monday. They have been remanded to judicial custody. The Deodurga police and Sindhanur town police have registered separate cases. — Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: Sudha Chandrashekar of the All India Progressive Janata Dal defected to the Janata Dal (Secular) and was declared President of the Mandya Zilla Panchayat here on Tuesday, giving a jolt to former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Ms. Chandrashekar's defection to the Janata Dal (S) was followed by the sudden disappearance of the Congress member Krishnegowda, who remains untraced. As a result, the Congress fell short by one vote, resulting in the President's post going to the Janata Dal (S). — Special Correspondent
