CHENNAI: The Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, is more than just a name in textbooks, for a group of school students and adults who participated in a programme to pay homage to him, at Narada Gana Sabha on Monday. The programme, organised by the committee for centenary celebrations of Satyagraha movement, began around 10 a.m. and continued until after 5 p.m. After each performance, the applause from the audience went on for several seconds. The first programme slot was dedicated to Gujarat, Gandhi's native State. Then followed the host State, Tamil Nadu. At 11 a.m., the audience observed silence to mark Martyr's Day. While students of Chennai schools put up skits and dances depicting the diversity of our nation, clippings from Gandhi's life were screened between the programmes. The best part of the show was building the map of the nation. , Children carried the map of each of the 28 States and the seven Union Territories, which were fitted on a white screen. The final result appeared like a successfully completed jigsaw puzzle. Then the participants paid a floral tribute to the Indian map. Playback singer Anuradha Sriram gave a rendition of Gandhi's favourite song `Vaishnava Janato.'
