MYSORE: The Mysore City Corporation has instituted an award in the name of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, who is also known as the "saint-king" and the father of modern Mysore.

This was resolved at the meeting of the corporation council here on Monday. It was decided to present the award every year to a person whose contribution in public life is substantial. However, it is yet to be decided whether the award should be of the national level or State level in character.

The award will be presented on July 4, the birth anniversary of the Maharaja, and a panel comprising former Mayors and leaders of various political parties will decide who will get it.

The selection panel will also comprise the Deputy Commissioner, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore, Mysore MP and the corporation Commissioner, according to reports.

Suggestion

It was also suggested to include the Principal Secretary, Kannada and Culture Department, and chairpersons of various academies in the selection committee.

The suggestion to institute the award was mooted by writer Baragur Ramachandrappa when he inaugurated the 2005 Dasara celebrations atop the Chamundi Hills.

The award will comprise a purse of Rs. 1 lakh and a silver plaque.
