DHARWAD: Newspapers, especially those in North Karnataka, contributed a great deal to the movement for unification of the State by disseminating the views of writers, thinkers and educationists, Head of the Kannada Department of Kittel College G.M. Hegde has said. He was speaking after inaugurating a seminar on "Contribution of Dharwad District During Unification of Karnataka," jointly organised by Information Department, Kannada and Culture Department, Media Club and Alur Venkatarao Memorial PU College here on Monday. Even five decades after unification, differences persist among people.
Kannada teachers
It is sad that one has to demand appointment of Kannada teachers in ``Kannada Nadu," Dr. Hegde said. The younger generation should be aware of the importance of their mother tongue, culture and heritage, he said.
Heritage
Delivering the guest lecture, Deepak Alur said that Alur Venkatarao wrote Karnataka Gatavaibhava to make people aware of the heritage of "Kannada Nadu." He sparked the spirit of agitation through Karnatakada Vira Ratnagalu. Knowledge of mother tongue will make it easy for a child to learn other languages, said C.M. Pattanashetty, senior lecturer of Alur Venkatarao Memorial PU College. Ganesh Kadam, president of Media Club, spoke. P.S. Hiremath, Senior Assistant Director, Information Department, welcomed the gathering. L.H. Lakshani proposed a vote of thanks.
