KURNOOL: Residents of Ulindakonda village, led by CPI(ML) New Democracy secretary P. Gokari, staged a demonstration at the collectorate here on Tuesday urging the authorities to take immediate steps to stop blasting of hills close to the residential areas. Mr. Gokari said owners of stone crushing machines were blasting the hill to extract crude rock. As the hill was close to residential areas, walls had developed cracks but stone crushers were continuing their job. Local officials also overlooked the damage to the houses of the poor and backed the contractors.
Deafening noise
Mr. Gokari said old people and children were disturbed by the deafening noise from the blasting and subjected great nuisance besides damaging the houses. He said the people were scared to make a formal complaint to the authorities dreaded by the highhandedness of the stone contractors. He said the agitation would be intensified if no action was initiated. Meanwhile, District Revenue Officer Ramaswamy asked the Mandal Revenue Officer at Kallur to visit the village and assess the damage.
