Chennai : Top class oarsmen from 13 clubs affiliated to the Amateur Rowing Association of East (ARAE) will vie for honours during the three day championship at the Madras Boat Club from February 2 to 4. The event will be formally inaugurated on Wednesday (February 1). Founded in 1933, and first rowed at the Royal Connuaght Club in Pune in the same year, the ARAE regatta is an annual event for the premier rowing clubs in the Eastern hemisphere of Asia. Madras Boat Club is a founder member of the ARAE and won the prestigious Willingdon Cup in the inaugural year. The field for the 65th edition starting on Wednesday will feature as many as 96 competitors in single sculls, double sculls, coxless pairs, coxed fours and mixed fours. There will also be an event for veterans. " Our team is practising well and will be among the medals," said Neville J.Billimoria, Captain of Boats, Madras Boat Club, on the eve of the championship. The following clubs have entered for the event. Bengal Rowing Club (Kokatta), Calcutta Rowing Club, Calcutta University, Colombo RC, Corps of Military Engineering (Pune), Govt.Polytechnic (Pune), Hong Kong RC, (Hong Kong), Karachi BC, Kodaikanal RC, Myanmar Club (Myanmar), Singapore RC, The Lake Club, Kolkatta, and Madras Boat Club.
