Paddy with 20 per cent moisture to be accepted

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday said the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation had been asked to procure paddy with moisture content up to 20 per cent and discolouration up to 5 per cent, as the Centre had permitted the State to do so.

She said as per the quality control norms fixed by the Centre, moisture content of the paddy procured from farmers should not exceed 17 per cent and discolouration, 3 per cent. However, the State Government had pleaded with the Centre to relax the norms, as cultivation and quality of paddy crop were badly affected due to the rain that lashed the State in October, November and December last year and the moisture content went up. — Special Correspondent

Staggering system for kerosene distribution

CHENNAI: A staggering system for sale of kerosene through the public distribution system on prescribed dates would be implemented from Wednesday, says an official release. The dates on which kerosene would be distributed for ration cardholders concerned and its supply on the last two working days of every month for those who had not availed themselves of the fuel on the prescribed dates, were displayed on the notice board at the PDS outlet having 2,000 ration cards and above. — Special Correspondent

Police Duty Meet from February 2

CHENNAI: A 77-strong police contingent will represent Tamil Nadu at the seven-day 49th All-India Police Duty Meet to be held at Madhuban in Haryana from February 2.

Led by the Superintendent of Police, Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Department (CB CID), M.S. Nasimuddin, the team would include dog handlers and others. The competitions will be held in six events — scientific aids to investigation, computer awareness, anti-sabotage check, photography, videography and dog squad.

In the last meet held in Assam, the Tamil Nadu team secured both the first and second shields in scientific aids to investigation. — Special Correspondent

Essay competition for school students

CHENNAI: The Sri Bharati Tirtha Trust, Sringeri and Sringeri Bharati Vidhyasramam, Chennai, have jointly announced an essay competition at the State-level for school students in connection with the 56th birthday celebrations of Sri Bharati Tirtha of Sringeri Sharada Peetam. The competition is open to students of standards IX/XI. The students can select any one of the topics — "Advaitam kaatum vaazhkai neri," "Oppatra Mahan Sri Adi Sankarar," "Pottrutharkuriya Sri Sringeri Mahangal" and "Desiya Orumaipaatil Ilaignar Sakti." The last date for sending the essay is February 25. Only three students from each school can participate in the competition. Contact address: R. PDP leader arrested

KOLLAM: The Kollam district president of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), H.S. Shaji, was arrested by the Tamil Nadu police late on Monday night from his house at Mynagapally near here. The arrest was on charges of "financial misappropriation" he is involved in Tirunellveli district. Shaji has business interests in that State. He was produced before a Magistrate Court at Sasthamcotta on Tuesday. — Staff Reporter

Old man killed as lorry hits motorcycle

Ramanathapuram: Naganathan (54), son of Sethuraman of Pattinamkathan, who was riding a motorcycle, was killed when a lorry, proceeding to Pattinamkathan, collided against the vehicle at a check-post near here.

Fatally knocked down

Ramanathapuram: Manoharan (36) son of Karmegam of Akathayiruppu near Abiramam, was killed when a lorry knocked him down at Paramakudi on Tuesday.

Dies in fire accident

Ramanathapuram : Nagalinga Thevar (70) of North Street was charred to death at Naripaiyur near here on Tuesday.

He could not come out from his hut when six huts including his hut got fire.

Head constable dies

VIRUDHUNAGAR: V. Ganesan (48), a head constable attached to the Amathur police station, was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Virudhunagar-Sivakasi road on Tuesday.

The police said that he was going to court when an unidentified vehicle hit him.

NAAC team visit

SIVAKASI: A three-member peer team of National Asessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore, will visit Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College here from February 2 to 4, for re-accreditation of the college.

The panel will assess curricular aspects, teaching, learning and evaluation, infrastructure facilities, student support and progress, research consultancy and extension services in the college.

Water level

MADURAI: The water level in the Periyar dam stood at 130.50 feet with an inflow of 63 cusecs and a discharge of 600 cusecs.

The level in the Vaigai dam was 66.8 feet with an inflow of 346 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs.

`Be humane'

Udhagamandalam: The downtrodden should not be denied opportunities to come up in life, said the Nilgiris Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar, while presiding over the valedictory of the Humanism Week celebrations here on Monday. Emphasising the need to be humane, he said that one should not trample on the rights of another.

The Tamil Nadu Government was implementing a number of schemes for the benefit of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. Among those who participated were the Udhagamandalam MLA H.M. Raju, the Chairman of the District Panchayat, K.V. Poulose, and the Director of the Tribal Research Centre, Jakka Parthasarathy.

A cultural programme by students marked the occasion.

Relocation

Coimbatore: The Udumalpet Branch and the ATM of the ICICI Bank have been relocated from No. 25/26, Dhali Road, to No. 245, Pollachi Road, New Old Bus Stand, Udumalpet.

According to a release, the branch will remain open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Monday through Saturday).

Four held

NAGAPATTINAM: Four persons, including a physical education teacher

Muthukumar of the Government Higher Secondary School, Kuthalam, have been arrested in connection with alleged murder of Sekar (55), Headmaster of the Government Higher Secondary School, Nangoor, near Sirkazhi on Thursday.

Sirkazhi police said three others, were said to be casual workers. The arrests were made on Friday.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.53 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 2,362 cusecs and the outflow nil. — Staff Reporter

Collector disburses welfare assistance

Tuticorin: Collector V. Chandrasekaran disbursed welfare assistance worth Rs. 5.26 lakh to 38 beneficiaries at the grievance day meeting held here on Monday.

He gave away Rs. 15,200 each to 32 girls of Ettayapuram, Thittankulam, Kovilpatti and Udangudi under the Girl Child Protection Scheme.

He disbursed Rs. 50,000 to five persons belonging to Scheduled Castes, who had suffered humiliation in public. While Pushpavalli of Kovilpatti, Kali, Fatima and K. Madathi (all from Srivaikundam) received Rs. 6,250 each, S. Satya got Rs. 25,000.

Muthulakshmi from Mela Thattaparai received free house site patta worth Rs. 10,000.

DMK cadres arrested

ERODE: Demanding the immediate release of the DMK Deputy General Secretary and MLA, M.K. Stalin, arrested in Chennai on Tuesday, about 750 DMK volunteers, including 45 women, were arrested while picketing near the Erode Municipal Central Bus stand. They were taken to a kalyana mandapam. Protesting against the arrest all the 13 DMK councillors staged a walkout from the meeting hall. - Staff Reporter

Blood donation camp

ERODE: On behalf of the Department of Bio-chemistry, Youth Red Cross, NSS and NCC of Kongu Arts and Science College, Nanjanapuram a blood donation camp was conducted on Monday to mark the Martyrs Day. The Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Ms Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan inaugurated it.

She also released a Blood Group directory. About 200 students donated their blood on Tuesday at Erode and Karur Government Headquarters Hospital and Perundurai Medical College Hospital. C. Swaminathan, Principal presided. - Staff Reporter

Drowns

SALEM: An 8-year-old schoolboy drowned in a well in Chinna Tirupathi here on Monday. The Police said R. Vijay, studying Class III, fell into a roadside well when he tried to peep into it. - Staff Reporter

Demonstration

SALEM: Members of the Janata Dal (United) Tamil Nadu Labour Union staged a demonstration here on Monday urging the State Government to set up a welfare board for the painters. State president of the union T.R. Arasu led the protest. - Staff Reporter

Drowns

SALEM: An 8-year-old schoolboy drowned in a well in Chinna Tirupathi here on Monday. The Police said R. Vijay, studying in Class III, fell into a roadside well when he tried to peep into it. The Fire Service personnel recovered the body.

Prize Nite 2005

SALEM: The Golden Gates Matriculation Higher Secondary School here organised the `Prize Nite 2005' to honour its students who excelled in academic and extracurricular activities here recently. Students of various classes received stars and gold and silver medals based on their performance. Toppers of various classes were presented with certificates. Teaching and non-teaching staff, who had completed 10 years of service, in the school were felicitated in the function.

Besides, the following special awards were given to the students for their excellence in academic and extra-curricular activities:
