U.P. Govt. asked to release water from Narora dam

ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday directed the Uttar Pradesh Government to continue to release 450 cusecs of water from Narora dam in Bulandshahar so that adequate water flowed in the Ganga river here for the ongoing Magh Mela.

The order was passed by a division bench of Chief Justice A N Ray and Justice Ashok Bhushan on a public interest petition complaining that the water of the Ganga was ``so polluted that it was not fit for taking a holy dip'' during the Magh Mela.

The court also directed that a senior official of the Narora dam file an affidavit stating the amount of water being released, as the petitioner had alleged that no water was being released.

It fixed Thursday for further orders on the matter.

Ascetics assembled here for the Magh Mela had earlier launched an agitation over the level of pollution and in the holy river threatened to boycott the bathing associated with the Mauni Amavasya and Basant Panchami rituals.- PTI
