12 National records set

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA : In an eventful day at the 26th senior National archery championship, as many as 12 National records were established — two in the men's recurve and 10 in compound event — at the SAI, Eastern Centre, here on Tuesday.

Jhanu Hansadh of Jharkhand bettered all her five records in the compound event she had set at Ernakulam last year. She erased all her previous marks by scoring 1381 (overall), 334 (70m), 345 (60m), 343 (50m) and 359 (30m).

All the five records in the men's compound also saw a change with two from Naresh Damor (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) — (353 (overall), 335 (90m)) and Santosh Tamang (Services) — (342 (70m), 343 (50m)) and one from Palton Hansda (Jharkhand) — 356 (30m).

But the most celebrated of all was the new marks set in the men's recurve. National champion Jayanta Talukdar of Jharkhand rewrote Tarundeep Rai's record of 1325 points in the overall by getting 1350.

Rahul Banerjee, who finished second in the overall with 1327 points, broke one of the long standing records of Limba Ram in the 50m distance. Banerjee's 341 upstaged Limba's 1991 record of 332 set here in Kolkata.

Preliminary matches of the Olympic individual rounds were also gone through where a number of upsets were registered. The most shocking upset was the elimination of women's recurve defending champion Runu Swargiary (Jharkhand) by Reshma Banerjee. Runu lost 143 to 145 in the first round.

Olympian Satyadev Prasad's poor run continued as he was knocked out in the first round by an unknown Uttaranchal archer Nikhini Mao. .
