Coastal Paper Mills announces lock-out

Rajahmundry : The Coastal Paper Mills Limited, ancillary unit to AP Paper Mills, announced lock-out on Tuesday.

In a lock-out notice issued by president (operations) P.K. Suri, it was alleged that the long-term settlement, arrived by management and workers before the Additional Labour Commissioner, Hyderabad, on December 19 on revision of wages and benefits, was breached by workers. - Staff Reporter

Stir against `neglect' of Telugu on Feb. 21

HYDERABAD : Protesting against the `neglect' of Telugu and attempts to introduce English medium in Government schools, the Telugu Language Struggle Federation will organise mass hunger strike on February 21 at Telugu Talli statue near the Secretariat.

Federation's honorary president Chukka Ramaiah, president C. Dharma Rao and vice-president G. S. Varadhachary told reporters here on Tuesday that the Government was slowly introducing English in Government schools. - Special Correspondent

Truck carrying mopeds catches fire

KADAPA : A truck carrying 50 new TVS mopeds was gutted when snapped overhead electric wires fell on it near Gajulapet in Vempalle town, causing an estimated loss of Rs. 40 lakhs.

The truck was carrying the mopeds from the TVS factory at Hathibele near Bangalore to Bharat TVS showroom at Vijayawada, according to the police.

The mishap caused two-hour disruption in traffic movement on the Kadapa-Pulivendula route. - Staff Reporter

Worker dies as auto overturns

KADAPA : A worker of a stone-polishing unit, K. Ramanjaneyulu, 25, died and two others were injured when an autorickshaw overturned after hitting a buffalo near Peddanapadu in Yerraguntla mandal on Monday.

Ramanjaneyulu was going to his native village Urutur from Yerraguntla when the mishap occurred. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD : The toll-free telephone number of the Andhra Pradesh State Legal Services Authority -- for extending free legal advice to the public and immediate redressal in emergency cases -- has been changed and the new number is 1800-425-2999, according to a press release. - Special Correspondent

Four killed as two RTC buses collide

KURNOOL : Four persons, including a driver, died and 15 others sustained injuries when two RTC buses collided at Yerrakota near Yemmiganur in Kurnool district on Tuesday.

According to reports, the buses, bound for Kurnool and Adoni, collided.

The dead were identified as Sivanna (driver), Mallikarjuna, Shakeela and Bhimanna. The injured persons were admitted to hospital.

Two electrocuted

NIZAMABAD : Two youths -- Sikhari Srinivas,19, and Chiluka Vinode, 21, of Lakshmapur in Varni mandal were electrocuted when they came in contact with a live wire put around an agriculture field in the village on Tuesday. - Staff Reporter

Tricycles, hearing aids distributed

MADANAPALLE: P. Suryanarayana Goud, Additional District and Sessions Judge, Madanapalle, Civil Judge Ramalinga Reddy and industrialist T.N. Raghunatha Reddy distributed tricycles to 30 physically handicapped children and hearing aids for 99 hearing impaired children and wheelchairs to 45 children on Tuesday at Velugu school for physically handicapped.

The judges inaugurated the solar 300-litre heaters costing Rs.40,000 donated by Ninitha of the US, daughter of retired engineer Krishna Reddy. — Correspondent

CHITTOOR: The Indian Bank has launched Visa Global Credit cards here on Tuesday. Talking to media persons P.K. Chopra, Deputy General Manager, said that over 10,000 credit cards had already been approved and distributed. — Correspondent

Four arrested, motorcycles seized

KADAPA: Kadapa Police on Tuesday busted a four-member gang of motorcycle lifters and recovered three stolen vehicles from them, V. Narayanaswamy Reddy, Kadapa West CI said on Tuesday.

A scooter mechanic shop owner, Peeraiah, his worker, Moulali, and two others Mastan and Prasad, all of Ravindranagar here, were taken into custody on Monday, the inspector told a press conference at Taluk police station. One of the accused was student of a degree college here, he said. — Staff Reporter

KADAPA: The 143rd jayanthi of saint-poet Vavilakolanu Subba Rao, who came to be known as `Andhra Valmiki' by translating Ramayana from Sanskrit to Telugu, will be celebrated at Sri Kodanda Rama Swamy temple at Vontimitta on February 1. Special pujas will be performed and lectures organised on Subba Rao's biography, literary works and spiritual preachings on Wednesdayeporter

CHIRALA: Chirala Municipal Council at its meeting on Tuesday accepted the conditions of residents of Kotla bazar which is to be widened to 60 feet. While agreeing to forego their sites and houses, the residents wanted payment of compensation as per present market value 10 days before acquisition of the property.

Syamala Kumari, municipal chairperson, presiding, resolved to collect betterment tax of Rs.50 per square meter for the sanction of building licence at places where there are no roads and drainages. - Corrrespondent

Minister's visit

Srikakulam: Minister for Revenue and Relief Dharmana Prasada Rao will arrive on a one-day visit in the district on Friday. The Minister will reach the town by 8 a.m. and participate in programmes and distribute cheques to Vamsadhara oustees at his local office.

Setti Balijas protest

Kakinada: Setti Balijas Association district unit president and general secretary of the State Bahujan Samaj Party Chollangi Venugopal, in a representation, appealed to the Collector and Superintendent of Police to take action against those insulting toddy tappers through obscene dances and plays during village festivals. He alleged that police did not act, even though complaints were lodged over such incidents in Chebrolu village recently. - Correspondent

Farmer dies in accident

Kakinada: A farmer Gottimukkala Suryanarayana Raju (30) of Rajupalem village was killed when the scooter he was riding was hit by a private tourist bus near Veruvaipalem Centre on Tuesday. He died instantaneously. - Correspondent
