CPI(M) asks State to drop move on capacitors

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The State Committee of CPI(M) has appealed to the Government not to force farmers to install capacitors to agricultural pumpsets.

B.V. Raghavulu, party secretary, on Tuesday reacted sharply to the announcement by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy at the Collectors' conference that free power supply would be stopped to farmers if they did not install capacitors and change the foot valves. In a statement, he faulted the "threats" being held out to farmers by the Government.

Subsidy sought

The CPI(M) leader suggested to the Government to get the capacitors/foot valves installed either free of cost or provide subsidy, if it believed that the installation would result in saving of power and increase revenue to the utility. It would be proper for the Government to make the investment rather than force farmers to get the capacitors installed, "with a sword hanging on their head."
