Chandy to return tomorrow

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will be back in Thiruvananthapuram at 8.15 a.m. on February 2. He will embark on his return trip from Zurich by a Qatar Airways flight at 11.45 a.m. on February 1. It will reach Doha at 7.35 p.m. He will take the 1.25 a.m. Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Thiruvananthapuram on February 2. Chief Minister's Principal Secretary Dinesh Sarma is accompanying him. Governor R.L. Bhatia is understood to have contacted the Chief Minister's wife and made enquiries about his health on Tuesday. — Special Correspondent

Chandrappan re-elected

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: C.K. Chandrappan, MP, has been re-elected president of the All India Kisan Sabha. The Kisan Sabha's 27th national conference, which concluded at Midnapur in West Bengal on Tuesday, also elected Sathyan Mokeri as one of the national secretaries and K. Prakash Babu, N. Ravindran, Mathew Varghese, A. Balakrishnan, P. Unnikrishnan, Thulasidas Menon, A.S. Sivadas, P.K. Chithrabhanu, V.B. Jayakumar, I.V. Sasankan and N.K. Awarded Sena Medal

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Lt. Col. G. Shrikumar is among those who have been included in the Republic Day honours list of the Union Government. He has been awarded the Sena Medal. He gets it for distinguished anti-terrorist operations in Tripura. He is the son of Col. (Retd.) R.G. Nair of Thiruvananthapuram. — Special Correspondent

Buddhadeb planning Malayalam film

Kolkata: After making feature films in Bengali and Hindi, director Buddhadeb Dasgupta is planning to direct one in Malayalam and another film for children. He said here on Tuesday that he hoped to make the film in a couple of years, but the modalities had not been worked out so far. Dasgupta said the film would have his trademark poetic style. "In each and every film, I want to surpass my last work. I hate to make films just for the heck of it," the director said. - PTI

Self-financing courses opposed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Association of Kerala Government College Teachers (AKGCT) will oppose the move to start the BA Economics (Honours) programme on a self-financing mode in Government Arts College here. A release by Association general secretary J. Prasad here on Tuesday, government colleges cannot be seen as institutions to earn money for universities. — Staff Reporter

Road blockade: case against 150 lawyers

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Pathanamthitta police have registered a case against 150 lawyers, including Bar Association leaders and senior advocates, for allegedly blocking the main roads leading to the Pathanamthitta Central Junction for about an hour during their agitation on Monday.

According to Circle Inspector of Police Sanalkumar, the police action was on the basis of a High Court order in this regard. — Staff Reporter

Youth Congress march

KOLLAM: The Yuvajana March, led by president of the Youth Congress State unit K.P. Anilkumar, will arrive in Kollam district on Wednesday.

Youth Congress district unit president P. Jermias said the march would be given a rousing reception at Enath.

A public meeting had been organised when the march arrived in the city on Thursday evening.

Sanskrit university to buy land

KOCHI: The Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit will purchase three acres of Government land for its Koyilandy regional centre at Keezhariyur. The Koyilandy centre had been functioning from a rented building for many years. — Staff Reporter

Retires from service

ALAPPUZHA: BSNL Alappuzha general manager P.V. Sebastian retired from service on Tuesday. Mr. Sebastian had been the general manager of the Alappuzha secondary switching area since 2000.Earlier, he had been director telegraph services, Kolkata. — Staff Reporter

Novelist dead

ALAPPUZHA: Novelist P.V. Thampy, 71, died of cardiac arrest at his house at Haripad on January 30 at 10 p.m. Thampy had penned 30 novels, including Krishnapparunthu and Soorya Kaladi. Kerala Bar Council chairman P.G. Thampy and filmmaker Sreekumaran Thampy are the younger brothers of the deceased. Thampy is survived by his wife and three children. The cremation will be held at Haripad on February 2 at 2 p.m.
