TIRUPUR: Enthused by the sanction given by the Commissioner of Municipal Administration to provide 15,000 pipe water supply connections, the Tirupur Municipality has stepped up works to provide more than 8,000 connections by the end of February to applicants who were waiting for months after paying the deposit. Setting February 28 as the deadline to provide all 10,664 connections, Municipal Chairman, M.N. Palanisamy said the work would be undertaken on a war footing. Of 10,664 nearly 1,250 connections were already given and 750 were given demand notices.
Deposits paid
Anticipating sanction from the CMA and implementation of the Rs.1,023 crore water supply project, the Municipality collected deposits from the applicants in March after four years. Around 9,698 applicants paid the deposit through online counters at the State Bank of India and 966 applicants were waiting since 1993 and 2001. Having a sanction to provide 2,000 connections from the CMA the local body started giving connections on September 15. So far it had given more than 1,250 connections, sources said. The Municipal Commissioner, M. Ashokan told The Hindu that all the 16 plumbers were asked to go ahead. "We are determined to provide at least 300 - 400 connections a day. The plumbers were told to engage adequate workers to complete the task without delay. It is up to the people to utilise the opportunity by paying the centage charges at the earliest.'' To maintain transparency, the local body had evolved a mechanism by fixing centage charges including cost for road cutting and restoration, plumber charge and material cost.
Pay charges
Since the Municipality is set to re-lay majority of the roads dug up for water supply and sewerage work, Mr. Ashokan said it would be immensely useful if the public pay the centage charges without delay. "As soon as they pay the amount we will provide the connections. It should be completed before taking up the road works. Otherwise public money would go waste if the roads needed to be cut soon after being laid.''
