`Hoardings ruining beauty of Mysore city'

Heritage city becoming hoarding city, says association

  • 20,000 hoarding poles erected against 2,000 poles sanctioned
  • There is a complete ban on erecting hoardings at select places
  • Association threatens to move court if hoardings are allowed to come up

MYSORE: The Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore (ACICM) has drawn the attention of the civic authorities to the proliferation of illegal hoardings in the city.

In a memorandum submitted to Mayor Bharathi, association convener Lakshman drew the attention of the Mysore City Corporation authorities to a series of meetings that took place in March 2005 and their outcome. It was resolved in the meetings that the city will be divided into five zones with each zone having not more than 400 advertisement poles of small size and 20 hoardings measuring 20 ft X 10 ft, he said.

"But it is unfortunate that though no fresh tenders have been invited, there has been a proliferation in the number of hoardings in the city," Mr. Lakshman said and claimed that over 20,000 hoarding poles have been erected in the city in the recent past, though the corporation has issued permission for only 2,000 poles.

    Big hoardings

There are over 1,500 big hoardings as against the official sanction for only 100 hoardings, he added.

He noted that there is a complete ban on erecting hoardings at K.R. Circle, Chamaraja Circle, Hardinge Circle, Visvesvaraya Circle, Irwin Road, the area around Mysore Palace, Sayyaji Rao Road, JLB Road, Gandhi Chowk, 101 Ganapathi Temple, Chandragupta Road, Bangalore-Nilgiri Road, Albert Victor Road, Harsha Road, Jagjeevan Ram Circle and Boulevard Road.
