Tincy Mathew won the women's triple jump gold.
PALAYAMKOTTAI : Reigning National junior champion Tincy Mathew (Kerala University) touched a career-best distance of 12.69m but fell short of the existing meet record by a 10 cms as she won the women's triple jump gold in the 66th all India inter-university athletic meet at the floodlit St. John's College stadium here on Tuesday. It was the sheer grit of this 19-year-old, a second degree zoology student at the S.N. College for Women in Kollam, that helped her win this evening. Trailing behind M.A. Prajusha (Calicut University) till the last round, Tincy nailed the gold only on her sixth and final leap, having fouled three of her earlier attempts. Coached by Udayakumar at the SAI training centre in Kollam, Tincy who had won the silver behind Mahatama Gandhi University's Salamma Antony in the last year's meet in Guntur, had fouled her first trail before landing at 12.43m in her second attempt. By then, Prajusha was firmly in the lead achieving a distance of 12.59m and it did look that she was well within reach to avenge the defeat she had suffered at the hands of Tincy at the Kerala junior meet in Kollam and the National junior meet in Chennai, both held last year. However, it was not to be as Prajusha could not match Tincy's best jump of the day in her last attempt. Salamma Antony, who had won the gold last year with a record-breaking effort of 12.79m, could finish only a poor third with a best of 11.93. Incidentally, all the top five spots in the event were taken by the girls from Kerala as former junior international A.P. Alka Chikili (Kerala) finished fourth with a distance of 11.74m and Reshmi Bose (MGU) fifth with 11.63m. Hardeep Kaur (Punjab) was the winner of the women's shot put gold after having thrown the iron ball to a distance of 13.80m, ahead of Punjabi duo Patwant Kaur (13.24m) and Sakshi Sharma (13.03). The other title to be decided in this section went in favour of Calicut's C.V. Rejimol who took the 5000m gold, finishing the 12-and-a-half lap race with a time of 18:11.85. Asha (Himachal) took the silver in the event and P.J. Sini (Calicut) the bronze. The lone gold which was up for the grabs, on the record-barren day, in the men's section was won by Rati Ram (Rajasthan) who with a last-minute spurt pushed Ajay Veer Singh (Chathrapathi Sambhuji Maharaj University, Kanpur) to the second spot in the 5000m. Rati Ram as he cantered home was timed at 15:16.30. The results (all finals): Men: 5000m: 1. Rati Ram (Rajasthan - 15:16.30), 2. Ajay Veer Singh (CSMU, Kanpur - 15:18.08), 3. Dinesh (Himachal - 15:30.16). Women: 5000m: 1. C.V. Rejimol (Calicut - 18:11.85), 2. Asha (Himachal -18:20.64), 3. P.J. Sini (Calicut - 18:38.32). Triple jump: 1. Tincy Mathew (Kerala - 12.69m), 2. M.A.Prajusha (Calicut - 12.59m), 3. Salamma Antony (MGU - 11.93m. Shot put: 1. Hardeep Kaur (Panjab - 13.80m), 2. Patwant Kaur (Punjabi ), 13.24m, 3.Sakshi Sharma (Punjabi - 13.03m).
