CHANDIGARH: Senior Punjab cadre IAS officer K. R. Lakhanpal on Tuesday took over as the State's 33rd Chief Secretary succeeding Jai Singh Gill. Mr. Gill retired after serving in the position for two- and- a- half years. An officer of the 1972 batch, Mr. Lakhanpal has superseded eight officers. A postgraduate in economics, Mr. Lakhanpal's forte is finance and planning which explains his extended tenures as Finance Secretary not only in the present regime but also in the previous Akali-BJP regime. On assuming office, Mr. Lakhanpal, who has been suffering from a viral infection for the last few days, said he would try his best to maintain the traditions of the office besides according top priority to the State Government's ongoing programmes and policies. While the Chief Minister was said to be in Delhi, Finance Minister Surinder Singla, Principal Secretary (Excise and Taxation) Mukul Joshi, Principal Secretary (Information and Public Relations and Forests) D.S. Jaspal, Secretary (Personnel) S.S. Rajput and Information and Public Relations Director B.S. Sudan were present when Mr. Lakhanpal arrived to take charge of office. Earlier, the IAS Officers' Association of Punjab gave a warm farewell to Mr. Jai Singh Gill who has retired after putting in nearly 35 years of service.
