2500 turn up for national-level abacus competition

CHENNAI: The second national-level competition was conducted by M/s Ideal Play Abacus (IPA) India on Republic Day.

The competition was held in two stages. The preliminary round was held in 200 centres across the country, in which over 5,000 students took part.

Of them, 2,500 students were selected for the final round of the competition.

The final was held at the Chennai Convention Hall at Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam.

According to Shaarada K. Sriram, managing director, IPA, the student participants came from Delhi, Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nasik, Bhubaneshwar, Chattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Punjab and Tamil Nadu.

There were so many students from Maharashtra that they had to book whole compartments in the train.

The competition began at around 9 a.m. and went on till 12.30 p.m.

The chief guests for the event were Mrs. Y.G. Parthasarathy, Dean of Padma Seshadri Group of Schools; Ramesh Krishnan, former tennis champion; Steven Tan, moderator, Play Abacus, Malaysia; and Jayabhalan, director, Play Abacus, Malaysia.

There were about 750 prizes and the top champions also won special prizes sponsored by Club Mahindra and other companies.
