CHENNAI: A one-day workshop on `Natural Language Processing - Challenges and Limitations' is being organised by the Computer Society of India Div VIII and Vellore Chapter at VIT on February 6. Natural language interfaces enable the user to communicate with the computer in English or other human languages such as Tamil, Hindi or German. Applications of such interfaces are database queries, information retrievals from texts and so-called expert systems. Current advances in the recognition of spoken language improve the usability of many types of natural language systems. The workshop is designed to meet the needs of professionals and researchers working in natural language processing (NLP) and allied areas, including theoretical and application perspectives of descriptive linguistics, lexicology etc. The focus will be on the challenges and the limitations of NLP. This discussion is expected to help to bridge the gap between traditional computational linguistics research and the implementation of practical applications with real world scenarios.
Topics
The major topics of discussion will include Natural Language Understanding, Natural Language Generation, Machine Translation, Dialogue and Discourse Systems, Natural Language Interfaces and Parsing. This workshop is for faculty members and researchers from the academia, artificial intelligence practitioners, knowledge engineers from R&D organisations, IT professionals and industry consultants. Bettina Harriehausen-Mühlbauer, professor, FH-Darmstadt University, Germany, will be the key resource person along with academicians and industry experts drawn from IIT-Chennai, IIIT-Hyderabad, CAIR-Bangalore and Yahoo! Bangalore. For registration and details contact H.R. Vishwakarma, Chairman, CSI Vellore Chapter or e-mail chairman@csivc.org or call 0416-2202196, 2202187 or 2202276.
