SURPRISE FOR RESIDENTS: The Highways department relaid the Maduravoyal road overnight on Monday. Photo: K. Pichumani
CHENNAI: Do miracles happen overnight? Yes, say Maduravoyal residents. After having protested for several months over bad stretch of Poonamallee High Road between Koyambedu and Maduravoyal, residents had decided to relay the pothole filled stretch on Tuesday. Representatives of Maduravoyal and Aminjikarai Lorry Owners Welfare Association circulated pamphlets calling for the people to assemble near Maduravoyal ration shop to repair the badly damaged NH4 Road from their own funds. However, the Highways authorities had brought in paver machines and road workers on Monday night and relaid the road in an overnight operation. The two-kilometer stretch between Koyambedu and Maduravoyal had been unmotorable for nearly two years now, residents said. The pamphlets distributed by the residents said it took more than 90 minutes to traverse the stretch. Several accidents occurred along the stretch in recent months. But this kind of miracle is not new for these residents. In 2003 too, authorities repaired the road immediately after the residents resorted to a similar protest.
