Swamy challenges EC decision

New Delhi: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday challenged the decision of the Election Commission to defreeze the "farmer with a plough" symbol, which his party had been allotted since 1977.

In a petition in the High Court, Dr. Swamy said the action was "illegal, unauthorised and arbitrary." Appearing before a Division Bench of Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Rekha Sharma, he said the party was allotted the symbol during the Lok Sabha election held in 1977. After hearing preliminary arguments, the Court asked Dr. Swamy to file additional information on his claims.
