HYDERABAD: English medium sections will be introduced from the next academic year in all residential schools in the State run by the Government for children of SCs, STs and BCs through their respective departments. This will be done without prejudice to existing Telugu medium sections in these institutions. Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy issued instructions to this effect to senior officials at the concluding session of the Collectors' conference here on Tuesday night. He said English medium would make these children competitive and mobile, giving them the much needed edge and promising better careers and job prospects. There was strong urge among the weaker sections to send their children for English medium schools for these advantages, he said, referring the feedback he received from several sarpanches and others.
When Srikakulam Collector A. Koteswara Rao expressed reservations about Telugu being sidelined, the Chief Minister asked the officials present in the hall to raise their hands if their children and grandchildren were not in English medium. None raised the hand. Dr Reddy said later that the Government would put in efforts to get "classical language status" for Telugu, a benefit already accorded by the Centre to Tamil with the allotment of Rs. 100 crores.
