GMC budget meeting put off

Introduction of proposals without Council approval opposed

  • Corporators insist on having more time to study and understand budget proposals
  • Budget to be introduced before February 10
  • Debate on construction of permanent buildings for 172 schools in Guntur district

GUNTUR: The budget meeting of the Guntur Municipal Corporation has been put off indefinitely as corporators from both Congress and Telugu Desam Party objected to introduction of the budget proposal without prior approval of the Standing Council.

Within one hour of convening of the council meeting, Mayor Kanna Nagaraju put it off even without introducing the budget proposals. "The budget is directly introduced in the council for approval without the prior approval of the Standing Council which is against the norms," said TDP floor leader Yaganti Durga Rao. Leaders of all political parties blamed the officials for it. The Mayor said he would ensure that discussion on the budget began before February 10.

    ZP meeting

Meanwhile, the special meeting of the Zilla Parishad discussed the construction of school buildings from the funds released by National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development and "unscientific" way of selecting the schools.

The meeting convened here on Tuesday was meant to discuss the ZP budget and pass the same. However, the members found fault with the officials of many departments for slow progress of works. The construction of permanent buildings and classrooms across 172 schools in the district generated debate.

The members approved Estimated Budget for 2006-07 with a total outlay of Rs.141.60 crores and a projected surplus of Rs. 3.16 crores.
