Staff Reporter

Major companies scout for recruits at Job Mart at IT Kerala

KOCHI: All roads led to the Infopark at Kakkanad on Tuesday, the first day of the five-day IT Kerala 2006 show as fresh graduates and experienced ones turned up in their thousands to attend job interviews.

We expect about 5,000 and can easily handle upwards of 4,000, said K.G. Girish Babu, Chief Executive Officer, Infopark, as he watched young people pour into the temporary pandals raised close to the new Vismaya IT complex in the Infopark.

Sreesha Ramdas, a final year student of B.Com. at Bharat Matha College, Thrikkakara, says that she is happy to see so many companies looking for new hands ranging from call centres to software developers. She registered her name through the college.

Her friend, Ginu P.H., says that she also took a look around to familiarise herself with the Job Mart. A final year student of commerce, she is on the look out for a job that will suit her qualification, including as a call centre hand.

Young people had begun to pour into the Infopark hours before the interviews opened at 9 a.m. A large number of volunteers, private security personnel and employees of the Infopark were able to handle the groups in an orderly manner as the registration; allotment of numbers for tests and interviews went on smoothly.

Mr. Girish Babu said that the first three days of the interviews would be for those who had registered online and those coming in for on-the-spot registration could use the remaining two days.

Fourteen companies had begun interviews on Tuesday and from Wednesday all the 17 companies are expected to be ready. Among those looking for new hands is Tata Consultancy Services looking for a variety of talents.

Dell is looking for graduates with basic computer skills and good communication skills. Similarly, Progeon is looking for graduates or post-graduates of similar qualifications. So is HP, Allsec Technologies, Sutherland Global Services, 24/7, OPI, Genpact and Rivuletz Outsourcing Services.

US Technologies is looking for both experienced and fresh B.Techs and M.Techs or those with similar qualifications. IBS Software is also at the Job Mart.

Bobby K. Elias, an M. Phil. in computer sciences from Kothamangalam, was a little disappointed that he did not get a definite answer on the result of his interview. However, he was all praise for the organisers as the show brought together a big opportunity for the young people of Kerala.
