THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The University of Kerala has decided not to hike the fee for degree examinations this academic year, a press note issued here on Tuesday said. The university's Syndicate had, in December 2005, accepted the examination committee's recommendations for increasing the examination fee for BA, B.Com and B.Sc. examinations from Rs.11 a paper to Rs.25. The University Order (UO) in this regard was issued earlier this month. However, the Vice-Chancellor, under pressure mainly from student organisations, is said to have decided against the hike. According to Pro-Vice-Chancellor V. Jayaprakas, the fee for the degree course examinations was revised over two decades ago. He told The Hindu that he considered a hike essential in the present circumstances. "Now, the valuation fee for one degree paper is Rs.6 in place of the earlier Rs.4. The fee for setting a question paper has gone up from Rs.125 to Rs.200. The overall expense relating to examinations has shot up. One can argue that the fee has been more than doubled. But in real terms it is still only Rs.25," he explained.
