NEW DELHI: A businessman has been arrested by the Najafgarh police of South-West Delhi on charges of marrying twice without securing divorce from his first wife. He has been remanded to police custody for interrogation. The accused, Dharmender, had married the victim, a resident of Najafgarh, about a year ago claiming that he was single and lived at Vinod Nagar in East Delhi with his sister. But, days after the victim shifted to Vinod Nagar, Dharmender's "sister" began sleeping with them in the same room. When the victim object to it, Dharmender claimed that his "sister" was not well and hence could not be left alone during night. In the meantime, Dharmender's relatives allegedly tried to persuade the victim to get separated from him as he had contracted some dreaded disease. The victim received a jolt when during a visit, Dharmender's niece addressed his "sister" as her aunt, revealing that she was in fact his first wife. Following an altercation with him, she moved to her parents' residence about five months ago. Recently, she narrated the entire episode to a social worker who advised her to report the matter to the police. Subsequently, the victim lodged a complaint at Najafgarh police station, following which Dharmender was arrested a couple of days ago. The police have secured his custody for interrogation as they suspect that he has married some more women employing similar modus operandi, just for dowry. Investigations so far have revealed that he operated under different aliases.
