A helpline for Board nightmares

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: With less than a month to go for the annual examinations of Class X and XII conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), it is down to burning the midnight oil for most students. And while there are probably a lucky few who manage the pressure well, a majority continue to feel the heat.

Continuing with its annual feature of offering counselling services, non-government organisation Snehi has launched its helpline services from Wednesday. Nearly 20 trained volunteer counsellors will help students deal with the pressure through telephonic counselling.

Working under a team headed by child and adolescent psychiatrist Deepak Gupta, who is also the director of the Institute of Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, there are two psychologists and eight senior counsellors on the Snehi team.

The pre-exam helpline Disha will be available at telephone number 55978181 between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Last year saw the helpline receive as many as 1,638 calls, with nearly 73.5 per cent of the callers being students who were distressed and emotionally perturbed. Nearly 195 parents and relatives of students were also counselled and helped through the helpline.
