BJP councillors continue protest

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party councillors on Tuesday continued with their protest at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi headquarters against Mayor Satbir Singh's refusal to table the "action taken report" in the House regarding unauthorised constructions carried out by prominent politicians in the Capital.

Led by Leader of Opposition Subhash Arya, the BJP councillors staged a daylong dharna at Town Hall and also boycotted the annual Budget proceedings where Standing Committee Chairman Mukesh Goel gave his Budget speech.

All efforts by the Mayor to pacify the protesting BJP councillors failed as they insisted on first making the report public.

They also alleged that the MCD authorities had removed the name of East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit, who is also the son of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, from the report under political pressure despite that the fact that notice has already been served on him.

Announcing that all the BJP councillors would continue to boycott the House till the report was tabled, Mr. Arya said he would not present his Budget speech in the House on Wednesday in protest.

"It is probably for the first time in the history of the civic body that the Budget proceedings continued in the absence of the Opposition, clearly highlighting that the Congress has no respect for democratic norms," the BJP leader charged.
