Letters to the Editor
The gaiety of Pongal includes Jallikattu, the traditional bull-taming sport of rural folks. It is lack of proper organisation and regulation that leads to loss of precious human lives during the annual event. Let us not deprive villagers of festivities in the name of god or on the ground that Jallikattu is a barbaric sport.
B.S. Selvakumar,
* * * It is a misnomer to call Jallikattu a sport. It symbolises crude and misplaced machismo that has no place in a civilised society. What is required is a ban and not regulation, as it would be tantamount to legitimising the savagery. The Government should take the bull by its horns and ban the event, at least for the bull's sake.
P.V. Srividya,
