VISAKHAPATNAM: The Gandhi Peace Centre has decided to seek an appointment with the Governor and also meet the President during the latter's visit to the city to take up the alleged neglect of the Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation (GVMC) to Gandhiji's statue and "insult'' meted out to the Father of Nation. The sit-in protest near the Gandhiji statue in front of the GVMC main building was called off on Wednesday, the second day of the agitation, and it was decided to take up the matter with the Governor and President of India. The Gandhi Peace Centre would move the Supreme Court if necessary, the centre's president S. Gopal said. The Gandhi Peace Centre started the agitation in protest against the GVMC officials not bothering to clean the statue of Gandhiji on which a lot of dust had accumulated due to the road-widening work and failure to pay tributes Gandhiji on his death anniversary. Mr. Gopal regretted that the practice of the Chief Secretary sending circulars to the District Collectors to observe Gandhiji's death anniversary was discontinued after 1994-95. The GVMC authorities also did not respond to the Gandhi Peace Centre's request to allow it to erect a shamiana and use a mike set to conduct its protest programme, he added.
