This Day That Age
The President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, has warned the people that unless they developed a sense of unity and patriotism, which subordinated local, parochial and communal considerations, "we may lose the freedom we have achieved." Referring to the recent disturbances in the country, he urged the people to remember that the whole country from Cape Comorin to the Himalayas was theirs and they should contribute "to make the country worthy of its past and worthy of a greater future." The President, who was replying to an address of welcome presented to him by the Mayor of Trivandrum Corporation on February 1, said there were a large number of States, ruled by princes, many of whom, like the Rajpramukh of Travancore-Cochin, were enlightened. But not all of them were so. With the departure of the British, those who were not friendly might have thought that India would break up into a number of small principalities. Fortunately, through the wisdom, farsightedness and statesmanship of Sardar Patel and the patriotism of the princes, India had become one.
