``Fatwa against on-court attire meaningless''

Every sport has its dress code

Uniform civil code against spirit of Islam Concern at social evils in Muslim society

LUCKNOW: Rubbishing the fatwa against tennis star Sania Mirza's on-court attire, the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board on Wednesday said it did not come under the purview of the Muslim personal law.

"Every sport has its specific dress code. Fatwas on such issues carry no meaning," general secretary Maulana Nizamuddin told PTI here.

He was referring to the edict issued by a cleric some time ago against Sania's dress while playing on court. Following a meeting of its Islah-e-ma'ashra (Reforms in Muslim society) committee on Tuesday, the board also demanded abolition of Article 44 of the Constitution on a uniform civil code.

"The uniform civil code was against the spirit of Islam," the Maulana said.

As long as this Article remained, there would be a possibility of its being enforced one day. Either it should be abolished or Muslims exempted from it.

The Maulana said the personal laws were governed by the Shariat and no one could make any change in them. — PTI
