CITU members stage demonstration

Special Correspondent

Pondicherry: Members of the Pondicherry unit of CITU held a demonstration at the end of a rally at Head Post Office here on Wednesday urging the Central and State governments to help the welfare of the workers in the organised and unorganised sectors.

The member of the State Committee of the CPI (Marxist) T. Murugan was among those who addressed the demonstrators.

They sought a comprehensive legislation for the benefit of the workers in unorganised sector. Equal wages for equal work should also be the criterion in fixing emoluments for the workers without gender discrimination. They also wanted rise in rate of interest for the Employees Provident Fund to 12 percent. Other demands of the demonstrators included amendments to Bonus Act and protection of rights of workers.

The Union Territory Administration should convert the Committee for Welfare of Unorganised Workers into a Welfare Board, pension for such category of workers and establishment of a Regional Office of EPF in Pondicherry.
